VoLTE in South Africa: why it matters as 2G and 3G shut down

VoLTE stands for Voice over LTE: making phone calls over the 4G network instead of the older 2G and 3G networks. It sounds technical, but in 2025 it decides whether your phone can reliably make calls in South Africa.

Why it suddenly matters

South African networks are switching off legacy 2G and 3G to free up spectrum for faster 4G and 5G. Phones that are not configured for VoLTE on your network fall back to networks that are disappearing. The result is dropped or failed calls, even when your data works perfectly.

How to tell if your phone uses VoLTE

  • Look for a VoLTE or HD icon in your status bar during a call
  • Check Settings for a Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE option under your mobile network
  • If calls drop when you only have a 4G or 5G signal, VoLTE may not be active

This is exactly why we configure and verify VoLTE, and Wi-Fi calling where supported, on Vodacom, MTN, Telkom and Cell C for every device before it ships. Owning that step is the difference between a phone that just has data and one that actually works as a phone.
